Deral Black, 72, was expected to use the toilet and shower in her front yard over the winter months while she waited for repairs to her bathroom.
A plumber had found that the floor of her shower was at risk of collapsing.
Ms Black's complaints to the Land and Housing Corporation fell on deaf ears - until the Newcastle Herald published a front page story on her plight earlier this month.
"It's absolutely disgusting because it's right on the street," she said at the time. "Everybody walking past ... I'm not going out at night time because you can't even lock the door."
After the Herald's inquiries to the department, Ms Black received a call to confirm the repairs.
And after months of being forced to use the "disgusting" set-up, the work was finally completed this week.
"I'm feeling good," she said. "They finally finished up the last of it ... everything looks good."
Ms Black also received a rent refund of nearly $2000 from the government to make up for the inconvenience.
The repairs were held up because of disputes between the Land and Housing Corporation and a builder who suggested the whole bathroom needed to be repaired rather than just the floor, Ms Black said.
Ms Black thanked Newcastle MP Tim Crakanthorp for taking on her case.
"[Mr Crakanthorp's office] were the ones who set it all off," Ms Black said. "Otherwise I'd still be sat here with nothing being done about it."
Mr Crakanthorp said no person should be put in Ms Black's situation.
"Deral should never have been forced to use an unlockable portable bathroom in the middle of winter," Mr Crakanthorp said.
"It shouldn't have taken so much to resolve it ... I am very happy they finally fixed the bathroom and that Deral got the money.
"If the government was a decent landlord, we wouldn't be in this situation."
