Newcastle open their 2019-20 campaign when they host a star-studded Melbourne City at No.2 Sportsground on November 17.
They will go up against former Jets captain Emily van Egmond, who has signed with the W-League heavyweights.
Jets coach Craig Deans told the Newcastle Herald last week the departure of van Egmond meant 21-year-old Wheeler "has now become one of the most important players in the club".
The midfielder and former Young Matilda has been with the Jets since 2013 and played beyond her years to earn the Jets' W-League player of the year accolade last season.

"She's been around now every year since I've been the coach and the year before that as well, so she's now an experienced player," Deans said.
"She knows that she's important for the team and she wants to be better than she is, which is a good thing. She never takes it easy. She won the player of the year but she'll want to be better again and I'm sure she wants to one day play for the national team."
Simon was part of the inaugural Jets' W-League side in 2008-09, and has plied her trade all over the world from South Korea to Norway.
Davis is a Newcastle junior, who has played 73 consecutive games for the Jets. She has not missed a match since making her debut in 2013.
Between them they have the experience of nearly 200 W-League appearances.
Meanwhile, Jets midfielder Sophie Nenadovic looks set to miss the start of the 2019-20 season with a foot injury.
