The historic building, at Booragul, was damaged by fire on August 20.
Lake Macquarie City Council is calling for expressions of interest from locals with particular skills and experience to join the Awaba House Revitalisation Community Reference Group.
The group will share ideas and consider options for the future of the building.
Council's property and business development manager David Antcliff said this was an opportunity to be instrumental in the future of Awaba House.
"We are seeking community representatives with skills and experience in relevant areas such as design, construction, hospitality or tourism, and willingness to contribute ideas and explore future opportunities for this site," Mr Antcliff said.
"Community input into the way forward for the site is crucial in determining the best outcomes for the city. Being part of the reference group is a great opportunity to have input into a landmark plan that will pave the way for our community and visitors into the future."
The reference group will comprise a community chairperson, eight community members, including at least one member of the Lake Macquarie Aboriginal community, and council staff.
