Event co-organiser and Newcastle's Young Citizen of the Year Alexa Stuart, 16, said protesters who marched from Pacific Park to Civic Park on Saturday were not giving up on their goal of seeing political leaders take action on climate change.
"There was such a positive energy in the crowd," Alexa said.
"There's always a lot of frustration about inaction but when people get together in such a large group there's positive energy and a real sense of hope."
Alexa said the bushfires that raged across the country in recent months were a "major wake up call".
"They really hit home that this is what climate change looks like," she said.
"We need to keep that focus and keep hammering home that climate change is here now and we really need to take drastic action right now."
Alexa said protesters had four demands: 100 per cent renewable energy by 2030; no new fossil fuels or nuclear projects; increased funding for firefighters "because fire season is only going to get worse" and "First Nations justice" and indigenous-led land management.
Alexa said people power had led to large-scale change before and would again.
"When our politicians aren't going to make changes we need to put pressure on them and keep it up because people power is the only way we're going to make it happen."
Alexa said the event was the fifth she had helped to organise - she said it was a collaboration between a number of environmental organisations - and one of countless she had attended.
"For me climate change brings up a lot of emotions," she said.
"Lots of fear for my future, heaps of anger.
"The only way to get hope is to act, that's when the hope comes. For me it's about making sure I'm doing everything I can in my power to make sure we act now, which will safeguard our future."
The event included speakers, musicians and the Extinction Rebellion dance troupe performing a disco flash mob called Civil Disco-bedience.
Hunter protesters have asked adults to stand with them at the next School Strike for Climate on May 15.
