Concept designs for a new seven-storey acute services building - part of the $780 million John Hunter Health and Innovation Precinct - have been unveiled.

The new acute services building will include a new emergency department, critical care services, operating theatres, birthing suite, maternity unit, neonatal intensive care, larger and redeveloped inpatient units and a rooftop helipad.
Early works on the new acute services building are due to commence in 2021 before main works commence in 2022.
Stage 1 of an interim emergency department expansion has been completed as part of the government's COVID-19 response.
"I'm also pleased the emergency department expansion was delivered five months ahead of schedule, providing an additional 12 dedicated paediatric treatment areas and additional capacity to deal with the pandemic, with stage 2 scheduled for completion early next year," Health Minister Brad Hazzard said on Friday.

Construction of the precinct is expected to support more than 3000 jobs over the life of the project.
"John Hunter Hospital is one of the busiest hospitals in NSW and this investment will provide enhanced health facilities ensuring the region has a world-class hospital to cater to its growing population," Premier Gladys Berejiklian.
The precinct master plan was developed after a workshop hosted by Mr Hazzard in September, 2018, with more than 60 health, education, research, business and political leaders.
"I think it would be difficult for any government to be able to walk away from this bright new shiny building, and then have the old building... that will still have patient accommodation and still have some services," Mr DiRienzo said.
The new John Hunter building will incorporate several levels of additional parking underneath the new structures.
