Bright Energy was third in the Newcastle Mile, a Miracle Mile qualifier, last Friday night and he has another chance to make the race in one of two $100,000 group 1 sprints at Menangle.
Like in the Newcastle Mile, Bright Energy has drawn poor in gate nine and he has the added challenge on Saturday night of taking on King Of Swing, which became the Miracle Mile favourite on Friday following the scratching of Lochinvar Art.
The Kevin Gordon-owned Lochinvar Art was to race in the Newcastle Mile but he was a late scratching because of a hoof injury. Trainer-driver David Moran informed authorities on Friday that Lochinvar Art would not compete in the March 6 Miracle Mile. The news opens the door for another pacer to gain one of four wildcards into the race.
"If you run first or second, you are guaranteed, but if he runs third, Lochinvar Art isn't in, so you would think he's a big chance of a wildcard if he runs third," Elder said of qualifying on Saturday night.
Bright Energy, owned and bred by Elder's uncle, Michael Elder, raced outside leader Turn It Up in the last lap of the Newcastle Mile and finished 3.8m away from winner The Black Prince.
"He went pretty good. If the leader didn't roll off the pegs and give The Black Prince the run, and I didn't have to keep checking off that horse, he probably would have won or just got beat," Brad said.
