Goodwin stole the ball off Steve Ugarkovic deep in Newcastle's half and quickly ran into space down the left before unleashing a low strike back across Jets keeper Jack Duncan and inside the far post.
It was the decisive moment in a game of several great chances.
Adelaide threatened early and were rewarded in the sixth minute when Louis D'Arrigo hit a quality strike to score his first A-League goal.
Ugarkovic had tried to clear the ball but his effort went only as far as D'Arrigo at the top of the penalty area and he curled his shot past Duncan.
Ugarkovic went close to a stunning redemption in the 15th minute when his volleyed shot hit the crossbar.
Connor O'Toole responded for Newcastle with a class strike in the 22nd minute to equalise and also break his duck in the competition.
O'Toole played a one-two with Angus Thurgate to catch a sight of goal and he lashed a left-foot strike through the hands of a diving James Delianov. It was the Jets' 500th goal in the league.
The Reds' went closest to scoring again before half-time when Ben Halloran smashed a shot into the post in the 25th minute. Al Hassan Toure also hit a chance over the crossbar in the 27th.
Duncan kept the teams level with a top save down low to deny Ryan Strain in the 54th minute before the Jets rattled the woodwork in the 60th.
Former Red Apostolos Stamatelopoulos crashed a header off a Luka Prso corner into the crossbar only moments after both entered the game in place of Ali Abbas and Valentino Yuel.
It was the hosts' turn to shake the woodwork in the 70th minute when Goodwin's free kick beat Duncan but not the left post. But Duncan couldn't be denied seven minutes later.
The result left Newcastle 10th on 11 points from 11 games, while Adelaide rose to 16 from 10 matches and third spot.
In Newcastle's only change to the starting side from the 2-0 loss to Wellington, Abbas came in for Prso in midfield. It was the 34-year-old's first start in the A-League since November 25, 2017, when he was with Wellington.
