An elderly man has been winched to safety off the coast of Port Stephens after injuring his knee.

The Westpac Rescue Helicopter was sent to Broughton Island about 1pm on Monday after reports the 83-year-old got hurt while fishing and was unable to get back to his boat.
The chopper retrieved the man and a Critical Care Paramedic stabilised him.
He was taken to John Hunter Hospital in a stable condition, a spokesperson for the rescue service said.
