Newcastle Airport abruptly closed its airfield after around 7pm as the runway was cleared, but a spokesperson said the incident had caused minimal disruption.
The airfield reopened about 11pm, the airport confirmed.
Flights QF2427 and VA1108 from Brisbane were cancelled, while flight FP318 from Canberra was diverted to Sydney.
An airport spokesperson said three flights in total were disrupted as a result of the incident, that there had been no reports of injury, and that crews were working to clear the airfield.
Flights were expected to resume as normal Thursday morning, however passengers have been urged to check their flight information with their airlines.
All arrivals were on time about 7am on Thursday, with Brisbane-bound 7am flight QF2420 cancelled.
