The women's senior squad have been officially awarded the state title along with Sutherland Sharks after Basketball NSW announced that Waratah League competitions would be abandoned amid the evolving coronavirus outbreak.
IN THE NEWS:
The Hunters and Sutherland were on top of their respective pools when play stopped almost two months ago.
Newcastle had an 8-2 record from 10 appearances, most impressively accounting for previously unbeaten Centre of Excellence in a cross-over game at home on June 19.
The Hunters, who were unable to finish last year's campaign because of the global pandemic, also claimed championships in 2016 and 2019.
"Even though we would have loved to finish off the year it's recognition for performances throughout the season," Newcastle Basketball general manager Neil Goffet said.
"It also continues Newcastle Basketball's success in the women's competition in recent times and highlights our pathway system."
Goffet also pointed out the "Best Female Development Program" prize received by Newcastle in 2019.
Basketball NSW chief executive officer Maria Nordstrom released a statement on Thursday.
"Firstly, thank you for your patience. This is not easy on anyone, and we appreciate your support," she said.
"Following last week's monitoring of the COVID situation in greater Sydney and now regional NSW as well, it has been blatantly clear we will not be able to continue the season in early September.
"We feel for the kids and adults who have been affected and have not been able to complete a full season over the last two years.
"We can only hope we will be back to a new normal soon and that we can complete a full season next year. In the meantime, stay safe and get vaccinated."
In the men's Waratah League the Hunters had a 6-6 record from 12 outings this year.
Joint winners were declared between Centre of Excellence and Manly Warringah Sea Eagles.
Elsewhere, Australia were due to meet Canada in the quarter-finals of the women's under-19 World Cup in Hungary on Friday night with Newcastle's Chyra Mullaney Evans part of the Gems squad.
