The popular event has been running for a few years now out of a Cams Wharf base and will be once again supported by Lake Macquarie City Council.
It is described as for people who "love the outdoors, have a genuine passion for fun and adventure and want to push yourself to new limits".
For the first time it will be staged over two days - February 12 and 13.
Two courses will be offered on both days - the classic and the novice.
Designed for teams of two, the overall objective of the Max Adventure Race Series is to have fun while navigating and completing the designated course.
It is done together with teammates completing each discipline side-by-side, not in relay format.
The course is kept secret until race day and participants must tick of a number of checkpoints in turn by navigating the course on foot, mountain bike and kayak.
Event spokesperson April Gillies said the event catered to a range of abilities.
"The novice course is less technical and it's shorter," Gillies said.
"It's definitely not as hard and won't take as long. You could do it anywhere from three to six hours. It's not a hard course. The Lake Macquarie event is a good mix between some hills, flat and a beautiful, calm lake."
Just to keep you on your toes, a natural obstacle or two, such as a creek crossing, may be thrown into the mix with participants told to prepare for the unexpected.
The classic course comprises roughly 15 to 25 kilometres of mountain biking, five to 10km of trail running or walking, and two to 4km of kayaking.
The novice course is around five to 15km of mountain biking, three to 5km of trail running or walking and one to 2km of kayaking.
There are multiple legs of each discipline. Mountain bikes can be brought or hired. Two-person kayaks will be supplied as part of the entry fee.
Kyaking is done on Lake Macquarie and some of the trail running involves coasteering - travelling through rock platforms, inlets and tidal pools.
Entering an event is a great way to stay motivated and committed to your health and fitness journey.
The Max Adventure Race is three months away, providing plenty of time to get moving towards a goal of completing the course.
Doing the event in a pair also means you can commit to someone else's fitness goal, which keeps you both accountable to training.
The Max Adventure Race comprises five events in total - three in NSW and two in Queensland. Other locations are the Blue Mountains, Sydney's Royal National Park, Wild Horse Mountain on the Sunshine Coast and Brisbane's Enoggera Reserve.
