About 50 firefighters remained at Weston Aluminium on Tuesday working to extinguish the flames still burning in hard to reach locations of the Mitchell Avenue industrial complex.
The fire started in pallets of hand sanitiser stored outside the building and spread quickly, sending thick plumes of black smoke high into the air and across the town. Police are investigating the cause of the blaze, and inquiries are currently ongoing.
Fire and Rescue NSW Superintendent Scott Dodson said crews were working on Tuesday to remove the roof of the main building to extinguish "hidden fires".
IN THE NEWS:
"The roof collapsed, so it was hiding all the fires from us," he said. "As we take off the roof panels we can identify where the fires are and get water on them."
Simultaneously, Superintendent Dodson said an excavator was removing smouldering debris from the site to be extinguished.
A dam at the back of the premises that has gathered fire water runoff has also been sandbagged and a commercial waste company has been contracted to pump the water out for treatment.
Superintendent Dodson said wind conditions were favourable and the aim was to be fully offsite by Friday.
"I think that's a pretty reasonable goal for us," he said.
He said atmospheric monitoring of the surrounding area was showing zero readings, but urged people who smelled smoke to keep their doors and windows closed.
