THE region's daily COVID case numbers dipped back below 1000 in the 24 hours to 4pm on Sunday, with Hunter New England recording 902 new cases.

Across the region there were 541 positive rapid antigen test results recorded, and another 361 results confirmed via PCR testing.
There are 26 cases in Hunter New England Hospitals, and two in intensive care.
It comes as health authorities predict a new sub variant of the virus - BA.2 - will soon begin to push out Omicron as the dominant strain in NSW.
Hunter New England Health public health physician Dr David Durrheim said they estimate between 30 and 40 per cent of cases in the state to be the new sub-variant of the virus.
Across NSW, there are more than 1000 COVID-19 cases admitted to hospital, including 47 people in intensive care, 15 of whom require ventilation.
There were 8,911 positive cases notified in the 24 hours to 4pm in NSW on Sunday - including 4,788 positive rapid antigen tests (RATs) and 4,123 positive PCR tests.
The 4,123 positive PCR results were returned from a total of 31,001 tests.
