In the NSW Police Northern Region, which covers the Hunter and stretches from the Hawkesbury River to the Queensland border, officers issued 1356 infringements during the double demerit period.

The state's long-weekend road toll was four deaths - including two people who died in the Northern Region, where 25 were injured in 65 major smashes.

In one tragic case, a 41-year-old man died at the scene of a smash on the Pacific Highway at Glenthorne - near Taree - on Monday morning.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.

Meanwhile, police caught 495 people speeding across the long-weekend.

Seventy-four of the 236 motorists caught drink-driving across the state were busted in the Northern Region.

There were 2381 speeding infringements issued throughout NSW.

"During what has been a busy period on our roads with school holidays, Easter and the Anzac long-weekend, unfortunately police are still seeing risky driving behaviour," highway patrol commander Assistant Commissioner Brett McFadden said.

"Those individuals who thought they could drink and drive without being caught have learnt the hard way this weekend. This is a timely reminder to have a plan B to make sure you return home safely.

"Whilst the Anzac Day operation may have concluded, police will continue proactive taskings to keep the community safe."
