More than 350 parishioners packed into Christ Church Cathedral at Newcastle on Saturday for the bishop’s farewell service.
Dr Farran, who also celebrated his 68th birthday on Saturday, told the church he believed his successor could create Australian history by being a woman.
A spokesman for the Anglican Church said a synod would meet in April next year to discuss who should succeed Dr Farran.
Until then Assistant Bishop Dr Peter Stuart will act as caretaker, undertaking all of the regular bishop’s duties.
Dr Farran was educated at the Australian National University and St John’s College at Morpeth, ordained in 1968 and became the diocesan Bishop of Newcastle in 2005.
He said he was looking forward to retirement with his wife Robin in their new home at Morpeth.
