The synod gathered under Bishop Administrator Dr Peter Stuart on Saturday to consider electing Bishop Thompson, 56, to serve as the 13th bishop of the city.
A statement from the Anglican Diocese of Newcastle said Bishop Thompson had received very strong support from both the clergy and the laity.
Raised in the Upper Hunter, Bishop Thompson is married. Since 2007 he has been the Bishop of the Northern Territory, where he is also a member of the Northern Territory Government Ministerial Advisory Council on Business.
‘‘I accept the synod’s decision and with God’s love and grace come to be among you as a servant leader,’’ Bishop Thompson said from South Korea, where he is visiting as an executive member of the Council of Churches East Asia.
‘‘It is a privilege to come home and serve God’s people there.’’
Bishop Thompson will be installed as the Bishop of Newcastle on Sunday, February2, next year, in Christ Church Cathedral.
