The museum has begun a two-week installation of its new Deep Oceans exhibition, moving in items such as a life-size giant squid and a 750-kilogram model of an angler fish.
The exhibition will look at how these unusual deep-sea creatures have evolved and survived 4000 metres below the water’s surface.
The museum’s public programs manager, Samantha Wilcox, said visitors would be able to drive a simulator for a deep-sea exploration vessel and meet ocean scientists, who will be able to answer questions on deep-sea habitat and its bizarre sea life.
Children can join a special trail with the ‘‘Octonauts’’ on an adventure through the museum.
The exhibition opens on December 7.
