Organisers and sisters Gemma Slattery and Karla Cowper will host their third boutique designer market on Saturday, promising a celebration of art, design and fashion at an event that also encourages visitors to enjoy a bite and sprawl on the rugs provided at Pacific Park, Newcastle East.
Tastebuds will be spoilt for choice, with Casa de Loco's pop-up restaurant providing traditional lemonade, quesadillas, chicken wings, corn on the cob and finger food; Raw catering for those who enjoy fresh and healthy treats; and Fifi La Femme offering scrumptious macarons in flavours such as salted caramel, passionfruit, musk and creme brulee.
Maudie Mac's Travelling Teahouse offers tea served in vintage-style china with scones, clotted cream and jam, which can be enjoyed outside its retro-style caravan or on trays elsewhere in the park. Next Left Espresso will provide freshly roasted coffee.
"We're still looking for food stalls that are not your average vendor; people who are quirky, creative foodies who like to push the boundaries and present their food well," Slattery said.
"There are lots of fantastic artisan and children's markets in Newcastle but we saw a gap in the market for a fashion, art and design market pitched at a younger audience."
The sisters remember being dragged as children to markets by their super-shopper father, who was interested in clothes, accessories and collecting.
Slattery later worked in fashion and beauty sales and as a personal stylist, while Cowper was a buyer for David Jones, Burberry London and The General Pants Group.
Slattery moved from Sydney to Newcastle for her husband's job six years ago, with Cowper following two years ago for a lifestyle change.
"Gem and I talked about setting up a market for years," Cowper said.
"We loved markets where you could shop for great fashion, pre-loved clothes and emerging designers, and were going to Sydney for our market fix.
"We couldn't believe there wasn't a similar offering up here."
Cowper said the sisters aimed to establish a regular community event that would become a calendar landmark, support local businesses, and act as an initiative that would create a network of like-minded creative people to collaborate and support emerging designers and artists.
About 35 stallholders will participate on Saturday, including Oh Fleur bespoke floral design, Horselove clothing, IIXII jewellery, Annie Everingham Illustration and Nathan Henshaw photography, as well as musicians Joe Cox and Anna Milat.
The markets will run on the third Saturday of every month, from 9am to 2pm, at Pacific Park, Newcastle East.
Vote for your favourite brew
FANS of the Tony Brown Ale, born of a collaboration between The Grain Store and Bridge Road Brewers, can vote for the brew in The Hottest 100 Australian Craft Beers of 2013 poll.
Kicked off by The Local Taphouse in 2008, the poll's top spot has previously been taken out by beers such as Feral's Hop Hog, Little Creatures' Pale Ale and Stone & Wood's Pacific Ale.
The Grain Store will count down the hottest 100 craft beers live on Australia Day and will sell some of the top rating ales. Visit craftypint.com/news/post/h100-craft-beers-of-2013. Voting closes at 11.30pm tomorrow.
