REPAIRS will be done to Swansea bridge this week, following an accident where a car crashed through a barrier and narrowly avoided a fall into the channel below.
Three pedestrian fencing panels and two bridge panels would be repaired at a cost of about $15,000, Roads and Maritime Services said.
‘‘The pedestrian path on the northbound bridge will be closed until repairs are complete,’’ a spokesman said.
A detour will allow pedestrians to use the southbound bridge walkway.
The crash, which occurred on Saturday, caused a two-kilometre traffic jam and closure of northbound lanes for several hours.
Contra-flow on the southbound bridge helped ease congestion somewhat, but could not prevent bottlenecks.
Police said it appeared the driver had lost control of the vehicle while attempting to change lanes.
