Roads and Maritime Services finalised the first stage of the upgrade work on a two-kilometre section of Cessnock Road between Mulbring Street and Wakefield Road.
The safety upgrade started in June and involved widening and rebuilding the road.
The aim is to reduce the number of crashes along this stretch of Cessnock Road.
During the works the RMS identified additional measures needed to further improve conditions. These include additional shoulder widening, tree removal and the need for roadside safety barriers.
Work started on the extra improvements yesterday and is expected to be completed by October, weather permitting.
Work will be carried out Monday to Friday from 7am to 5pm. Lane closures and a 40km/h speed limit will be in place.
