A STORM which is predicted to bring gale-force winds and dangerous surf to the Hunter this afternoon is moving slowly along the coast, according to the Bureau of Meteorology.
The Bureau has issued an updated severe weather warning for the region, saying a complex low-pressure system was inching up the coast after wreaking havoc in Sydney.
The whole system is expected to start moving away from the coast on Tuesday morning.
Newcastle City Council said rising seas had closed all the city's beaches but the Ocean Baths remain open.
Lifeguards ask anyone near coastal areas read and obey safety signs and exercise caution.
Strong winds around 65km/h with gusts of 90km/h are forecast for parts of the Hunter and are expected to bring damaging surf.
The next warning will be issued about 5pm.
