The carnival was scheduled for Saturday, March 12, and the individual titles were scheduled the next day.
A strong south-easterly on the Saturday whipped up big seas, damaging surfboards, boards and skis.

Merewether Surf Club’s newest boat, the Garry Wright, was smashed beyond repair.
Swimming events and the junior boat events were adjourned to the Sunday.
Successes during the weekend included Newcastle winning the Australian title in the beach relay and Swansea-Caves Beach winning the junior boat race.
The carnival was watched by a group of visitors from New Zealand, Ceylon, Hong Kong, South Africa and Japan who were in Australia to attend the first international conference on lifesaving.
There was also a women’s beauty contest.
