Those who have survived and faced the disease were also supported.

Organiser Sheena Tierney said more than $10,000 was raised for the cause - National Breast Cancer Foundation research projects - but that would increase with fundraising to remain open until next month.

Ms Tierney said it was a ‘‘fantastic turnout’’ at the event, which was held on Newcastle Foreshore for the first time. A minute’s silence was held before the seven-kilometre run and four-kilometre walk.

Ms Tierney, who lost her mother to the disease, said the event was ‘‘a lovely way to celebrate those people we’ve lost and support those fighting breast cancer’’.

‘‘Breast cancer touches many families – it’s a cause close to many people’s hearts,’’ she said.

Participants were able to wear a tribute card in memory or support of someone. The event was held nationwide.

By 2020, it is estimated 17,210 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer each year in Australia – an average of 47 women a day.
