Newcastle MP Tim Crakanthorp wants ferries to be a factor in the government's planning for the city, alongside light rail, trains and buses.
He has written to transport minister Andrew Constance and is organising a meeting with Roads and Maritime Services and Transport for NSW, at which he will raise the proposal of more ferry stops and seek advice on their viability.
The idea has been mooted before, but Mr Crakanthorp said now was the time to discuss it while the government was re-examining its Wickham transport interchange project after having recently bought The Store.
