OneDay, a combined effort by local church groups, took on about 50 projects in the Hunter.
They included cleaning up Hunter Street, playground and garden improvements at Mayfield East Public School, backyard blitzes and home maintenance in houses in Newcastle and Lake Macquarie.
Yesterday, teams were out in force for state-wide Graffiti Removal Day.
Newcastle lord mayor Jeff McCloy praised the volunteers’ efforts.
Cr McCloy said the ‘‘doers of this community’’ were setting an example for the incoming council.
‘‘They are to be congratulated and given support by the city,’’ he said.
Newcastle MP Tim Owen spent yesterday morning painting over graffiti at Islington.
‘‘Newcastle is a beautiful place,’’ Mr Owen said. ‘‘However, like many other towns and cities across the state, it is not immune from graffiti attacks, which detract from its beauty.’’
