The 23-year-old Sydney Thunder recruit broke her right wrist in two places on Sunday while diving for a catch in the fourth over of her team’s six-wicket loss to the Adelaide Strikers at Allan Border Field in Brisbane.
“I’ll play it day by day, but at the moment I just want to support my Thunder teammates to win as many games as they can and try and get to the final,” Bates said.
“It’s pretty devastating as there’s still nine games to go. There’s nothing I can do about it now, so I just hope I can run drinks to my teammates and still be included in there.”
The injury has cut short a promising start to Bates’ Twenty20 career in the lime green.
The Thunder were victorious in Bates’ three completed games where she claimed four scalps at 11.25, which included the team’s first wicket in WBBL against cross-city rivals, the Sixers.
