The popular Irish group member, who has family in Newcastle, was involved in an accident in early June that resulted in a serious head injury. He was sedated to a coma state.
‘‘I feel I got a second chance. I woke up from the coma after three months and the first thing I did was get my dad to bring my guitar in,’’ Kelly said.
The singer is on his sixth tour of America with Celtic Thunder. The group will return to Australia next year where it will perform at Newcastle Entertainment Centre on Friday, February 1.
Kelly, from Moy in County Tyrone, Northern Ireland, has an aunt, Bernadette McKinney, who lives in Newcastle.
‘‘I’ve got plenty of cousins in Newcastle too. I’m so proud to have them there. When we got the tour dates, I made sure Newcastle was on the list,’’ Kelly said.
Kelly said he enjoyed running on the beaches in between concerts in Australia.
‘‘For us, February is roasting in Australia but I do like wearing a pair of shorts and a T-shirt during that time of year,’’ Kelly said.
Celtic Thunder 2013, which starts in Cairns on January 23, will feature the band’s greatest hits, well-known rock ballads plus plenty of Irish tunes.
More than 3000 fans watched the all-male Irish singing group at Newcastle Entertainment Centre, earlier this year.
