Raymond Terrace-bred brothers Luke and Liam team up for Souths in their first Newcastle Rugby League decider together.
It comes 26 years after their father Craig won a competition for then club Waratah Mayfield with unborn Liam due to arrive just five days later. Prior to that their grandfather, Hilton O’Connor, went down 10-9 with the Cheetahs in the 1961 showdown.
The upcoming event for a third generation has sparked fond memories with Higgins senior going through old scrapbooks and “pop” O’Connor passing on his best this week via telephone.
“Hopefully we can get one together,” Liam said. “It’s hard to even make a grand final, so to do it with your brother makes that little more special.”
Liam dons the No.9 jersey against Macquarie while Luke, who turned 20 on Friday, starts from the bench.
Their sister Olivia is the girlfriend of Souths second-rower Ben Roose, who made his rugby league comeback this year following a long lay off with injury.
