Video footage shows three of the tourists being pounded by waves dangerously close to rocks at the Snapper Point sea cave, south of Catherine Hill Bay, as a lifeguard on a jet-ski pulls them to safety.
The jet-ski then returns to rescue the remaining swimmers.
Remarkably, only one swimmer, a teenage girl, was taken to hospital with a minor leg injury.
Lake Macquarie City Council’s manager of leisure services, Brad Sutton, praised the lifeguards for their skill in negotiating dangerous conditions.
The lifeguards rode the jet-ski from Lake Macquarie in rough seas to perform the rescue. The Westpac Lifesaver Rescue Helicopter was also called in shortly after noon.
The rescue was in an inlet part of a killer three-kilometre stretch of rugged coastline between Wybung Point and Flat Rock.
It has claimed the lives of at least 14 people in just five years.
