The community group believes Port Waratah Coal Services’ recent 40th birthday celebrations should provide “an opportunity to reflect on the need for change” to clean energy industries.
The group has written to the Port of Newcastle asking it not to extend the coal loader’s lease beyond 2024.
“The end of the current lease for the site provides an excellent time-frame for phasing out this facility, which is within a few hundred of meters of Tighes Hill homes, families and schoolchildren,” THCG spokeswoman Charlotte McCabe said.
"If a coal loader was proposed for this site in this day and age, it would obviously never be approved due to the proximity of homes and families.”
Ms McCabe believes the location of the loaders, which were recently replaced, is out of step with a modern city.
“This is an excellent opportunity for the Port of Newcastle to demonstrate its commitment to a better future for our community,” she said.
