And they are on show now at Newcastle library in a summer exhibition called Wildlife Photographer of the Year – a showcase of the world’s most gripping wildlife photography.
Narrowed down from 42,000 entries from 46 countries, the event promises 100 award-winning images that expose the fascinating nuances of animal behaviour.
Among them are a sea turtle gliding through a school of fish, the ominous portrait of a shark’s shadow next to a surfer, and an ape with marble-like eyes staring directly down the barrel of the camera.
The exhibition is on loan from the Natural History Museum of London until February 25, before heading to the next destination on its international tour.
Newcastle Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes said the exhibition, located in the Lovett Gallery, was a “must-see”.
“Like in previous years, the images in this exhibition are stunning,” she said.
