Cr Fraser launched the appeal at the ordinary meeting of council on Monday night, at which councillors and staff placed gifts under the tree.
The Mayor’s Christmas Appeal is conducted in conjunction with the Samaritans. This year, in addition to toys, it has been extended to include non-perishable food, Christmas items, essential household goods and gifts for adults.
“These gifts and donations will relieve pressure on families and individuals who are facing challenges and allow them to enjoy Christmas,” Cr Fraser said.
“It is important for us to look beyond our own circle at this time of year and think about how we can help others in our community and spread the goodwill of the season.”
The Mayor’s Christmas Appeal will continue until December 16. Unwrapped gifts and other donated items can be left under the Christmas tree at the Council Administration Centre, at Speers Point, or at Charlestown, Cardiff, Morisset, Swansea and Toronto Lac Mac Library branches.
The Samaritans also welcome cash donations, which can be made online at: samaritans.org.au
