Even those of us who bemoan the commercialism of Christmas can’t help but be caught up in the festive whirlwind.
For many in our region, however, even a Christmas with modest trimmings is beyond reach. These people are forced to either go without or put themselves deeper into debt to ensure their kids and loved ones don’t miss out.
This is where organisations such as the Samaritans are doing a wonderful job to ensure Christmas can be enjoyed by all, regardless of their financial situation. Last year, the Samaritans supported more than 5000 children from across the region during the Christmas season.
Lake Macquarie City Council has again teamed with the Samaritans to conduct the Mayor’s Christmas Appeal. This year, as well as toys, we are also inviting donations of gifts for adults and teenagers, non-perishable foodstuffs, toiletries and other essential household items.
There is always an unmet demand for gifts for adults and teens – if you are stuck for ideas, vouchers make great gifts for older recipients. Samaritans ask that gifts be unwrapped.
Donations can be made at the Council Administration Centre, at Speers Point, or at the Lake Mac Libraries branches at Morisset, Toronto, Swansea, Cardiff and Charlestown. The appeal is open until December 16.
