The festival, which is part of the official Surfest program, will include contests in all three surfing disciplines, with an additional masters (over 30s) event in the shortboard division.
A drawcard will be the team challenge, which will pit Lake Macquarie boardriding clubs against each other as they vie for a place in Surfest’s rich Orica Team Challenge at Stockton Beach the following weekend, February 4 and 5.
“Surfing is very much part of the Lake Macquarie lifestyle and council is delighted to be partnering with Surfest for the third year to present this festival,” Lake Macquarie mayor Cr Kay Fraser said.
“The event creates a real buzz in the community and provides significant economic returns for the local economy.
“It is also a wonderful opportunity for us to showcase our city through beautiful Redhead Beach.”
Surfest organiser Warren Smith said it was exciting that longboard, shortboard and SUP events would again be part of Surfest in the Lake Macquarie Festival of Surfing.
“The ongoing support of Lake Macquarie City Council is very important for Surfest and the greater Newcastle and Lake Macquarie area,” he said.
“This event with Lake Macquarie City Council and the community of Redhead completes the circle for Surfest, as we aim to achieve wider community involvement in our festival.”
The Lake Macquarie Festival of Surfing heats will take place on Saturday, January 28, followed by the finals, team challenge and presentations on the Sunday.
Last year’s Lake Macquarie Festival of Surfing – the inaugural event – was held in solid 1-metre to 1.5-metre waves under blue skies at Redhead’s Little Beach.
Surfers contested nine divisions while hundreds of spectators enjoyed ideal beach conditions.
The unique event attracted a high calibre of surfers in all divisions, including former world title longboard runner-up Jye Byrnes.
This year, markets will be held in the Redhead Beach car park on both days. Visit surfest.com.
