Wheeler Place will be transformed into Socceroo central for the duration of the 2010 FIFA World Cup tournament, with Australia's games to beam live on a big screen.
More than 1500 people are expected to pack out the plaza for the Socceroo opener against Germany on Monday at 4.30am.
A 6.3 metre by 3.1 metre big screen will be set up, the event billed as family-friendly with a no-alcohol policy and security.
Four years ago, between 3000 people packed out the plaza braving rain and the cold to cheer on the Socceroos when they reached the second round of the World Cup in Germany. If the telecasts become too popular, the screen will be relocated to Civic Park, organiser, Peter James, of Juicy Beans Cafe, said.
Mr James was instrumental in getting the Live Sites event off the ground in 2006.
"This year we were bashing on John Tate's door saying 'the city needs this'," Mr James said.
"If we're serious about becoming a host city, then we need events like this."
Newcastle has been named one of 10 possible host cities in Australia's bid for the 2018 or 2022 World Cup.
People need to bring their own seating or blankets.
