The show sees a cast of 46 young actors, aged between 8 and 16 years, take on the challenge of the all-singing, all-dancing production.
“We wanted to do something a little bit different for the kids,” director and choreographer Chelsea Willis said.
“We wanted to give them a chance to work on one of the more well known musicals, one of the more epic musicals.
“We also wanted to give our students a chance to look at something a little more challenging.
“We thought the dance element of this show was so different to what we normally do.
“We have an amazing cast of 46 who have completely blown us away.”
Ms Willis said the young actors had risen to meet the challenge and had done very well.
“They have really put themselves out there and really pushed themselves,” Ms Willis said.
“The production they have created is something I am so proud of and they should be proud themselves.”
The performance is abridged, some of the songs are a little shorter. Act I runs for 45 minutes and Act II runs for 40 minutes.
“There is not much missing, people’s favourite parts are not missing,” Ms Willis said.
The children sing live and dance at the same time.
“That was another challenge, but the kids sound wonderful … they have done a really good job and I am so pleased at how they sound,” Ms Willis said.
There are two casts of 23 which alternate performances. The musical director is Amber Lewis, assistant choreographer is Lizzy Lindus, and the production assistants are Annaliese Stojkovski and Galatea Kneath.
Cats runs until August 12, on Saturdays and Sundays, with 2pm and 7pm shows, at The Young People’s Theatre 26 Lindsay Street.
Ticket prices range from $17 to $23.
