Hodkinson, who has one season left on his contract with Newcastle, has been negotiating with both Manly and the Sharks since the signing of Mitchell Pearce from the Roosters left him with little chance of playing first grade at the Knights.
He knocked back an initial offer from Cronulla but it is understood they came back with an improved deal.
The Newcastle Knights confirmed on Sunday they had granted Hodkinson’s request for a release from the final year of his contract, effective immediately.
“Trent has been an excellent role model for our young players,” General Manger Football Darren Mooney said.
“He is a well-respected teammate and contributed immensely to our community program.
“We understand Trent’s decision to leave the Club and we wish him and wife Chantelle all the best for the future.”
He could start training with his new club as soon as Monday.
The 29-year-old former NSW Origin halfback played 40 games for Newcastle in 2016 and 2017.
