KAY ‘Becky’ Cotterill describes it as the “last minute” decision that paid off.

The former Newcastle High student, 17, spent most of last year working on sketches for her Higher School Certificate major work for Visual Arts.
Then two months before deadline, she changed her mind.
“I didn’t know how to do digital drawing – I’d never done it before – but thankfully I picked it up pretty quick.”
Ms Cotterill photographed industrial scenes, including a coal loader, in Stockton and Carrington and then did 18 digital drawings, which are now hanging in the Art Gallery of NSW as part of the ARTEXPRESS showcase.
“It feels amazing,” she said.
A total of nine Hunter students were selected for ARTEXPRESS. Reid Major and Hannah Raeside’s work is also hanging in the Art Gallery of NSW, where it will show to April 25.
