Last year I made the alarming discovery that, according to Exercise & Sports Science Australia, “a 100g Easter egg takes roughly a two‐hour walk for women, and a one-and-a-half‐hour walk for men, to burn off”.

To put this in perspective, three or four of those little solid eggs equates to around 25 grams.
The news came late to me last year, when I was already eyeball deep in workplace egg offerings.
So, this year, I have taken a pre-emptive strike by adding more time to my workouts ahead of the Easter long weekend.
I am also planning to do the Hill2Harbour 10-kilometre event as part of NewRun, Newcastle’s running festival, on April 15.
The event is usually held a couple of weeks earlier in the year and I think it has been very thoughtful of the organisers to schedule this for post-Easter, to give Novocastrians the perfect platform to burn off any excess egg consumption over the long weekend.
NewRun was three weeks away as of yesterday and will again have its home base at Market Street Lawn, near Queens Wharf Brewery.
There are four distances on offer, catering to the whole family, from a 2km kids’ event, to a flat 5km, hilly 10km and even hillier 21.1km half marathon.
The beauty of the Herald Hill2Harbour 10km is the hill is over and done with first up.
NewRun’s official event charity this year is CanTeen, which helps support young people in the Hunter living with cancer.
DAYLIGHT SAVING COMES TO END
If the darker mornings, and possibly the torrential rain last week, have thrown your 2018 fitness campaign into disarray, make the most of the end to Daylight Saving this weekend.
The change in time, although slight, always throws me out. But the good news is clocks go back an hour (I think – I always get this wrong).
My advice is make your move now and capitalise on the change. It should be easier to get up early while your body is still adjusting.
PREGNANT WOMEN NEEDED IN STUDY
Hunter Medical Research Institute and the University of Newcastle are calling for pregnant women to trial a visual app for diet control.
The smartphone app uses augmented reality to help with diet management during pregnancy and has received highly positive feedback from women trialling it.
Dietitian Hannah Brown is leading the study and hopes to enrol more expectant mums during their second trimester.
“Knowing what to eat, and how much to eat, during pregnancy is a major challenge,” Ms Brown said.
“Being bombarded with nutrition information can be overwhelming for pregnant women,” Ms Brown said.
“They are unsure what to believe when it comes to food advice, especially when it comes to carbohydrates.”
She said knowing about carbohydrate portion sizes played an important role in preventing adverse health outcomes, such as birth complications.
The study is seeking women 12-22 weeks pregnant. Find out more: tinyurl.com/pregnancystudyUON.
