For avid Newcastle netball fans, a key match-up coming into the second round will be GWS Fury’s match against North Shore United, which will see Victoria Aoake come up against Sabina Gomboso.
Aoake was part of the squad that upset second-placed Souths Lions in the Greater Open Championship last weekend, but in the state’s top competition comes into the match as favourite.
GWS recorded a comprehensive 66-37 dismantling of the Panthers to take control of the top of the ladder just one week in, and will be looking to continue their early momentum when they come up against North Shore.
United’s Gomboso, who regularly appears in the sky-blue of Forsythes Business Advisors in the regional top grade, will be looking to record her first win of the season at Aoake’s expense however, after their opening week outing against Manly Warringah Sapphires ended in disappointment.
In another of the streamed matches this week, Maddie Taylor, Sophie Buckley, Natarlia Bridges and Tarsha Hawley will look to back up Central Coast Heart’s “fairly inconsistent” win over UTS Sparks, after head coach Amber Cross revealed there’s “still heaps [the team] can work on”.
In the under 20s competition, Dakota Thomas claimed a 3-goal victory as part of the North Shores junior outfit last week, and the team will look to score a bigger win against the GWS youngsters this time around.
Thomas herself left the BNC Whanau-Souths Lion clash last weekend early with a limp, leaving question marks around her possibility for selection just four days later.
Hannah Cullen, Eliza Hand, Nikita Jackson and Danielle Taylor will round out Newcastle’s talent in the Premier League heading into the second round, with all four looking to deliver another major win – last week they dismantled UTS Sparks’ under 20s team by 20 goals.
The under 20s fixtures for the second round will begin at 8.40pm, while the opens matches will begin nearly two hours earlier at 7pm. Giants star Kristina Brice will be on commentary duty alongside Brittany Carter.
All matches – opens & under 20s – will begin from 7pm: samsungpremierleague.com.au/netball-nsw-premier-league-2018-live-streams.
