BYSTANDERS have revived a 68-year-old man who hit his head on rocks while surfing at Swansea Heads, a NSW Ambulance spokesperson said.
The man was surfing at Frenchmans beach about 11.40am on Wednesday when he fell and hit his head on rocks, the emergency service said.
“He was surfing when he stumbled while trying to get to his feet,” a spokesperson said.
“He fell off his surfboard and hit his head on the rocks in the water.”
The man was floating for about two minutes before bystanders were able to pull him into shore, NSW Ambulance said.
“They pulled him out of the water and began performing CPR,” the spokesperson said.
When paramedics arrived the man was alert and fully conscious, but was suffering a severe head injury.
“He had a large laceration to the front of his forehead which was originally haemorrhaging and was complaining of pain to his neck and back,” the spokesperson said.
Four paramedic units responded as well as a road medical team. The man was taken to John Hunter Hospital in a stable condition.
