How many combustible items do you have around your place, including door mats, garden furniture, and mulch?
These are just a couple of the questions that locals are being asked to consider as part of the NSW Rural Fire Service’s ‘Get Ready Weekend’ this Saturday and Sunday.
Fire brigades will host more than 600 events across the state featuring firefighting vehicle displays, information stands, kids activities and workshops.
It’s an opportunity for families to have fun, get to know their local firefighters, find out about the local fire risk, and learn just how easy it is can be to prepare for the bushfire season.

Among the local crews hosting an event is Peninsula Rural Fire Brigade.
The Mirrabooka-based crew will be joined by Morisset Fire and Rescue and local police at the Bonnells Bay shops, on Fishery Point Road, this Saturday from 10am to 2pm.
Martin Campbell of Peninsula Rural Fire Brigade said it would be an informative and fun event.
“There will be display set up from each of the emergency service teams with a possible ‘smoke house’ which the children can go into to see what the visibility is like when a house is full of smoke,” Mr Campbell said.
He urged local families to attend and meet their local firefighters and learn how to prepare their property if a fire does come.
“And people can find out information from the RFS about programs available to help them prepare their property if they cannot do it themselves.”
Mr Campbell said the most common mistake residents made in regard to their bushfire preparedness was not having a bushfire survival plan in place.
Such a plan involves four simple steps, which firefighters will explain on the day. Survival plans are also explained on the RFS website.
Children are invited to enjoy a jumping castle, and face painting, which will be set up as part of the event. NBN’s Big Dog will also attend.
