“Even if you can help out for just a couple of hours, we’d love to hear from you,” Morisset Lake Macquarie Agricultural Show president Justin Rumore said.
There are jobs that would suit two blokes in a ute. Jobs that school groups could be assigned. Tasks that women would excel at. And tasks for enthusiastic young adults, and wiser, older ones, too.
Staging the Morisset Show was a large undertaking for the show committee, Mr Rumore said. The work started a week before the event, peaked over the weekend, then continued in the clean-up on the Monday and Tuesday, he said.
“As the show has grown, so have the challenges for our committee who put it all together – and the average age of our committee is well over 70,” Mr Rumore said.
Making news:
Among them is show life member, committee vice-president, and volunteer, Bob Kildey.
“A job that would take Bob and myself all day to do might be done by four blokes in a ute in a couple of hours,” Mr Rumore said.
In the week prior to the show, star pickets must be installed, parking areas marked out, signage erected, pavilions hosed out, and food stands cleaned.
Over the weekend of the show, refreshments are to be provided to event stewards in the rings, toilets restocked, and runners required for an array of odd jobs.
After the show, packing up and cleaning the showground takes time.
“They aren’t big jobs, and they aren’t flash jobs, but even if we could get half a dozen people to help us over the weekend, it would take a lot of pressure off us,” Mr Rumore said.
