Lake Macquarie City Council's acting arts, culture and tourism manager, Jo Smith, said public art contributed to the city's attractiveness as a place to live, work and visit.
"This is a great opportunity for local artists to think outside the box, get creative and share their ideas to help beautify some of the intersections in Lake Macquarie City," Ms Smith said.
"The project gives local artists a chance to get their art on the streets, while making a valuable contribution to their community."
Artists are invited to submit their designs for traffic signal boxes located at Belmont, Valentine, Warners Bay, Cardiff and Windale that reflect the culture of the area.
Artists must submit full colour designs for each side of the box. In selecting the final designs, the judging panel will look at vibrancy, community appeal and connection to the location.
Applications close on Tuesday, April 30. Successful artists will receive $500 to complete the artwork. Download an application at lakemac.com.au
