"Womens self-defence is more than just physical," Sandy Hayes, of Hunter Valley Martial Arts Centre (HVMAC), said.
It's also about having the street smarts to remove yourself from potentially dangerous situations.
"As a female martial artist with 37 years of training experience, I have had to physically defend myself three times, but I cannot count the number of times that I have had to use my acuity to get myself out of a potentially dangerous situation before it has been able to turn violent," Ms Hayes said.
The classes are led by female instructors at HVMAC.
"We want to teach the mental and emotional side of self defence so we boiled it down to four lesson themes; standing your ground both mentally and physically, finding and using your voice, trusting your intuition, and creating and setting boundaries.
"The physical drills are built around these concepts."
Classes are held on Mondays from 6pm to 6.50pm at unit 4/25 Alliance Avenue.
