The Newcastle Art Space will award $9500 in this year's Newcastle Emerging Artists Prize.
Submitted works in the categories of 3D sculpture, painting, works on paper and photo-media are in the running, with divisional prizes of $1000 in each category, and a $500 people's choice award.
This year's judges are James Drinkwater, Jessi England and Rachel Milne.
On Wednesday, the judges narrowed the list of finalists in a rapid-fire Archibald-style sitting, leaving 45 works for the final judging round on Friday evening.
The overall winner will be awarded a $5000 cash prize, along with a 12 month studio residency at Newcastle ArtSpace, mentoring from an established artist and support to host a solo exhibition at the NAS gallery.
