A collision is understood to have occurred between Civic and Worth place on Friday afternoon.
The driver of the motor vehicle allegedly pulled out in front of the tram to overtake another car on Hunter Street, a witness said.
Trams were briefly stopped while the incident was being investigated.
"A light rail vehicle was side swiped by a car on Hunter Street heading west at 1.55pm today," a Keolis Downer Hunter spokesperson said.
"There have been no injuries and customers were immediately disembarked.
"Services were impacted for a short time, and are now up and running.
"It's a timely reminder for motorists to be aware of trams."
