In a courageous effort, Fitzgibbon hyper-extended his left elbow in the early exchanges yet stayed on the field for the full 80 minutes, scoring a try, creating another for Sione Mata'utia and racking up 31 tackles.
Scans have subsequently revealed the 25-year-old damaged ligaments, although fortunately there was no fracture.
"At this stage he'll be in a brace for three to four weeks and then a potential return to play at four to five," Knights head of performance Balin Cupples said.
Fitzgibbon joins an injury list that includes winger Edrick Lee (broken arm), fullback Kalyn Ponga (calf) and hooker Slade Griffin (knee).
In addition, Mitch Barnett will miss one more game through suspension.
Newcastle coach Nathan Brown will be hoping to bolster his squad with the return of Origin stars Mitchell Pearce, David Klemmer, Daniel Saifiti and Tim Glasby after Wednesday's series decider at ANZ Stadium.
