This operation signals the start of a proactive fire safety program being rolled out across NSW. The visits will be a chance for firefighters to inspect homes, test any installed smoke alarms, offer information and advice on the location and operation of smoke alarms, and to help develop home fire escape plans.
Firefighters will be continually conducting risk analysis in their areas to help identify those most in need, or possibly at risk. Crews will conduct letter box drops a few days before attending houses to speak with residents and offer a free, no-obligation home fire safety visit. Firefighters will offer this service to surrounding properties after a significant home fire.
If you feel you may be at risk and would like to organise a home fire safety visit, contact your local fire station.
This week also saw the retirement of Senior Firefighter Glenn Worthington after 34 years of impeccable service to the community. 'Wortho' joined Fire & Rescue in 1985 and has served at City of Sydney, Hamilton, Charlestown and the specialised Hazardous Materials Response section in Newcastle. In this time he has moulded and guided numerous young firefighters in the finer points of fire suppression and hazardous materials response.
We wish him all the best as he surfs into retirement.
