"If you are serious about maintaining your JP appointment you are urged to attend our meetings to increase your skills set and knowledge of the act," NSW Justices Association's Morisset branch publicity officer, Maureen Tweed, said.
The Morisset branch meetings are held at 7pm at Lake Macquarie Hotel (the Morisset pub), on Dora Street, on the first Monday of the month, where training sessions are usually held.
The branch also hosts community desks at Bonnells Bay Shopping Centre on the first Saturday of the month, from 10am to noon; and at Morisset Square on the second and fourth Thursdays, from 10am to noon.
The primary role of a JP is to witness a person making a statutory declaration or affidavit, and to certify copies of original documents.
JPs come from all walks of life and are available across NSW.
Ms Tweed, who is retired, said being a JP came with significant responsibility.
"I had been a Justice of the Peace since I had been at university but I really didn't take it as seriously as I should have," she said.
"Being a JP is a serious undertaking, not just a couple of letters to tack on after your signature."
Given our litigious society, it was only a matter of time before every JP would be called on to prove their competency, she said.
"There is absolutely no charge for our JP services," she said.
"If your JP need is urgent, please feel free to contact me."
